Dreams and Interpretation of Dreams

Dreams and Interpretation of Dreams

The subject is one of the oldest subjects man has. I do not want to engage in the psychology of dreams and what makes man dream, for I believe that many things are responsible for this. Dreams do not always like many believe has a divine origin. Dreams may have divine origin, but not all dreams come from God. Many nations that do not know God, receive guidance, instructions etc through dreams. Those who know the truth knows that man is dead to God and the things of God in his natural unsaved condition, in fact the Bible do testify that

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1Co 2:14

Man’s spirit is “dead” (Eph 2:1-3) to God, man’s mind is “alienated from God” (Eph 4:18) and man’s heart is “darkened” (Eph 4:18), man is “WITHOUT GOD” in this world (Eph 2:12) so that he do not have fellowship with God or God with man (inner guidance) (Isaiah 59:1-2). Furthermore what makes it more prominent is that man is at enmity with God and God with man in his natural state:

“for they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” ( Rom 8:5-8) “God has no pleasure in fools...” (Eccl 5:4)

So we know that they who are still in their sin and live according to their natural lives CANNOT PLEASE God or are not pleasing to God, so that God cannot and does not give man guidance and direction for man is out of fellowship with God.

Does Scripture have anything to say about dreams, can we know what the nature of dreams is? Yes, Scriptures have much to say on this subject. Let us look quickly to the Scriptural exegesis about dreams and where it comes from and its very attributes.

The Origin and nature of dreams

One origin of dreams can be from man himself:

“As a dream comes when there are many cares, so the speech of a fool when there are many words.  Ecc 5:3

This is the Scriptural emphasis of dreams, it comes when there are many cares, or as the original says: ‘through a mind that is occupied with many busy – ness.

So it is stated here that  much “business,” engrossing the mind, gives birth to incoherent “dreams”.

Again we read in Ecclesiastes

“Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore stand in awe of God.” Ecc 5:7

Here dreams are brought to the same level as “many talk” or many words. It is something that is part of man’s heart, it originates from man.  Dreams – many different kinds of dreams is also stated here as “meaningless”. That according to Holy Scripture is an estimate of dreams. It affirms that  most dreams doesnt  mean anything, like many words doesnt mean anything as well.

So in its context is says: "in a multitude of dreams, there are many vanities, so also in a multitude of words"  as dreams are vain things, or there are abundance of vain things that come into the mind in dreams; so vain and idle are the many excuses which are made for the non-performance of vows; or there are many vain things which are uttered in making of them, or in long prayers to God; or in discourses concerning him; to all which is opposed the fear of God.

You must notice that after dreams is spoken of as “vain” or “meaningless” the Word says: “...but fear thou Go...” This is truly noteworthy. Many are led by dreams and receive special guidance and thus teach people through their dreams, but Scripture discharge dreams as meaningless and the fear of God as all important! That means that the means by which man must fear God, that is His Word that He has given, must be the all guiding principle of life and doctrine and not dreams! It says in affect:  give no heed to dreams, nor to the many words of men, which are vain and foolish; but keep close to the word of God, and worship him internally and externally, in spirit and in truth; for herein lies the sum and substance of religion; see also Ecclisiastes 12:13;

The Targum (Jewish literature) is, "for in the multitude of the dreams of the false prophets believe not, nor in the vanities of the authors of enchantments, and the many speeches of ungodly men; but serve the wise and just, and of them seek doctrine, and fear before the Lord;''

Listen to the Word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet:

“How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD...” Jer 23:26-28

Here we have the two in parralel, the Word of God and the dreams of man! They are compared to each other like chaff and the wheat. Wheat have substance but chaff has no substance or weight. It is good for nothing! It states here also that God’s Word is of much greater value and worth than dreams! It is in the comparison made by the Lord here in Jeremiah. These prophets “by their dreams” taught the people by the “deceit of their own hearts” showing the origin of their dreams, it came from their deceitfull hearts and not from God! But they taught the people as if it came from God! One characteristic of any false prophet is that he always departs from the Word of God, either by dreams or revelations that they “received” and these dreams or recelations become more authoritive than the Word of God! This is how you will quickly discern a false prophet, they will USE the Word of God to enhance their dreams and teachings, they do qoute from Scriptures but it is taken out of its context in order to authorise and establish their deceit. They only use the Scrpyures to give it authentity, it is used to coat there poisen with the sweet taste of God’s Word only to let those who partake of it be poisened!

Again let  us look at Eccliaiastes  5: “In - dreams - are - divers vanities; but fear thou God - If, by the disturbed state of thy mind during the day, or by Satanic influence, thou dream of evil, do not give way to any unreasonable fears, or gloomy forebodings, of any coming mischief: - Fear God. Fear neither the dream nor its interpretation; God, will take care of and protect thee. Most certainly, he that fears God need fear nothing else. Well may an upright soul say to Satan himself, I fear God; and because I fear him, I do not fear thee.

God’s service, which ought to be our chief good, becomes by “dreams” (foolish fancies as of God’s requirements of us in worship), and random “words,” positive “vanity.” The remedy is, whatever fools may do, “Fear thou God” (Ecc_12:13).

Ecc 5:3 As a dream comes when there are many cares,  so the speech of a fool when there are many words.

Another origin of dreams can be from evil spirits and demons.

Many there have been that have received dreams and visions and revelations through deceptive spirits. We read in 1Timothy 4:1: “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils...”

One way these “seducing spirits” will influence men and establish their seductive doctrines and lies, is through dreams because dreams is hold by many as having divine origin, therefore they give that impression as if it comes from God to secure its reception. Most seduction and blaphemous doctrines has come to the church through men who have claimed to have received a message from God either through a dream or through some type of revelation! When looking at the church history, the influence on the christian faith has been penetrated by men who claimed to have received messages from God through dreams or visions! Joseph Smith (Mormon faith), CT Russel (Jehovahs Witnesses), Allen G Whyte (7th Day Adventism), Mohammed (Islam) and many others have made such claims and their revelation they have received either through dreams or visions have become their norm and authority even to the point where God’s Word is discarded and altered to fit their destructive heresies!

Jeremiah as already quoted refers to prophets that will stand up and say:

“I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart;  Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal.” Jer 23:25-27

Dreams are a medium by which spirits may communicate to a person. We see this readily in the nations of the world that do not serve the Lord God. It is mostly through dreams that deceptive spirits guides people. Many refer to it as ancestors or spirits that speaks to them. Many are guided then by these spirits. They receive their council through their dreams

One of the characteristics that the Lord reveals here is the very result of dreams that doesn’t have divine origin. They take men away from the Ways of God and from the Word of God to something else! This is something noteworthy! Dreams in most cases takes men and women away from trusting and following only God’s Word! It gives heed to things outside of Scripture and makes that as important as Scripture. What is worse is that it usually takes man’s heart away from the Person and Work of Christ! Remember that Jesus Christ is God’s final Word to mankind! (See Hebr 1:1-3 and Deut 18:18-20, etc)

Dreams may have divine origin

We cannot conclude this without showing this as well. God has spoken to men through dreams to warn them or to convey to them His will.

“For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.  He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword...” Job 33:15-18

Here Job says that God may speak to man through dreams! Many take this verse to teach that dreams are always a message from God! But look at this verse: It says that God speaks in a dream...”THAT HE MAY WITHDRAW MAN FROM HIS (that is man’s) PURPOSE... HE KEEPS BACK HIS (man’s) SOUL FROM THE PIT and HIS LIFE FROM PERISHING...” That means that God may speak to man through dreams and visions of the night TO WARN MAN of his ways so as to repent!!! He may speak to man so that man may come to realise his danger! That means that God may speak to some souls through dreams and show them that they are heading for destruction! But we know that this is not any more so, even though God may still speak in such manner! God doesn’t speak today through dreams to warn man, but He has sent His gospel through His servants to warn man of their danger of Hells fires!

“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”  Act 17:30-31

He will not merely tell someone through a dream what He wants them to do or to call them, no, He has appointed the preaching of His Word and the ministry of the Word and the very life of Christ with which man must come into fellowship with to speak to man!

Dreams say the preacher is meaningless in our lives. We should give earnest heed to God’s Word and we should fear God. (Eccl 5:7)

Again we read:

“And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.

My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? Num 12:5-8

Here the Lord says that He may speak through one of His prophets through a dream. In “dark speeches”. But to Moses God never spoke to him in a dream! God spoke to him face to face, while Moses was awake and sober! To no one God has spoken as to Moses. But the Lord said to Moses, He will raise another Prophet, in whom He will lay His Words and His purposes and this prophet will be like unto Moses! This refers to Jesus Christ, as God spoke to Him and through Him not through dreams, Christ is the INCARNATED WORD of God among all men, God therefore today doesn’t speak anymore anything to mankind as to what He has spoken through His Son! The Words and Works of Christ is the complete revelation that God wanted to give all man to eternity! That is why – because Jesus is God’s Word made flesh, (John 1:1, 14) that dreams and visions have no place among Christians because God has communicate Himself through His Son to all mankind! He’s message today is “Behold My Son, He is all I have to say to all humanity!”

What about dreams and the Christian?

What we must understand is that dreams do not occupy any abiding place in the Christian’s life and walk! This may seem strange to many! Dreams did not occupy any reference in the early church or was it on the minds of the disciples or apostles of the Lord, thus it did not have any prominence on the Holy Spirit through which these men spoke. It does not have any importance for us. We should not give heed to dreams but to God’s Word! The ruling principle of the Christians life is not dreams or visions but the Word of God! (2 Tim 3:16-17; Acts 20:32, etc)Never once in the New Testament was any reference made to dreams or its relationship to Christian living! Never once! That means that dreams was not and is not of any value by which God would speak or operate in His body! Although God have spoken through dreams in the past it was so to establish His Word among men. It is now through His Word that was given, ONCE DELIVERED (not a continual speaking) (Jud 1”3; 2 Tim 3:16-17) and which was established for all man as the final and complete revelation of God to mankind (Hebr 1:1-3; Rev 22:18-19, etc)

What is even more significant is that you never find dreams in the New Testament as even a gift or as even the smallest hint that dreams may have any true significance in the life of God’s people. Among all the gifts that the Holy Spirit chose to bestow upon the body of Christ, dreams were not among them! You do not find the gift of dreams or the gift of the interpretation of dreams! Nothing!

So in conclusion, dreams do not occupy any worth or value in the Christian life, for him who have Christ, have God’s complete revelation and in union and fellowship with Christ God’s Word becomes bread to the hungry and water to the thirsty! Christ is the complete fulfilment not only of the prophets but also of the way in which God has revealed Himself. God does not speak anymore through dreams but through His Son and the Word of God that we have! What God wanted to say, He has said through His Son and His Word!

So then: “let him that have a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that have My word, LET HIM SPEAK MY WORD FAITHFULLY...”

“Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore FEAR God.” Ecc 5:7
